Project Based Learning using Bocchan



Japanese 3 and AP students will work in groups of 2 or 3 to create a story/movie using Bocchan. Each group will read a chapter from the book and create a book report. Students will create a character map with information regards each character's name, appearance, personality. Students also create a summary story in Kamishibai style in Japanese. Students will present to in gallery walk. . Each group will teach their vocabulary and grammar that are necessary to understand their summary,

After they read, 2 groups (4 to 6 people) will work together and create an episode on " more trouble for Bocchan". Students will write a script for a movie, then create a film in which they will play the characters from the story. To come up their episode, students will conduct a research by reading blogs of foreign teachers in Japan. Students will ask questions through e-mail and ask specific questions. In film, they must include each characters’ information, location information, culture-shocking event, and solution.

Driving question: You need to answer these questions while you are completing the project.


1. As an American living in Japan, how does one manage the conflict of cultural differences between American and Japanese Culture?
2. What are culturally appropriate behaviors in Japanese Society?
3. What kind of behavior is NOT appropriate in the Japanese work environment?
4. What is expected when you move to new environment?

Language Objectives: You need to be able to comprehend regarding these topics.
1. Be able to state and reflect personality of characters
2. Be able to retell a story line with your own words. (Who, when, where, what, why, how?)
3. Be able state your opinion regarding the event. (How and why the event happened.)
4. Be able to compare and contrast cultural differences between American culture and Japanese culture.

Course outline

1st week:
Pre-reading activity
History of Japan
Map of Japan: Tokyo and Matsuyama

2nd week:
Read assigned chapter with group.
Research: vocabulary and grammar(sentence structures)

3rd week:
Create a character map and Kamishibai of your chapter.
Gallery walk

4th-7th week:
Create a story, character.

8th week:
Presentation of your story
